Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has said the northern region will not be protected from the cycles of flood, drought, and erosion until Teesta Master Plan is fully implemented. Highlighting the urgency of the project, he described its execution as a “demand of the times”.
The minister made these remarks on Thursday during the distribution of emergency relief to waterlogged residents in Moghalhat, Rajpur, and Khuniagach unions of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila.
During the event, Minister Dulu shared insights from his recent visit to China, where he sought international cooperation for the implementation of the Master Plan.
Referring to the prime minister’s recent speech in Parliament regarding Teesta, he asserted that the current “patriotic nationalist government” remains firmly committed to the realisation of this project.
He further called upon the public to spread the message of his initiated movement, “Jaga Bahe Teesta Bachai” (Wake up, brothers, save Teesta), to every corner of the northern region.
The minister emphasised that Teesta is a vital transboundary river deeply intertwined with the lives, livelihoods, and economy of the people in northern Bangladesh.
He noted that the river serves as a fundamental pillar for agricultural production, fisheries, environmental balance, biodiversity, and broader regional development.
Local administration officials and political leaders were present alongside the minister during the relief distribution programme.
