Seventeen-year-old Zafrin from Nilphamari stepped into the role of Chief Business Officer (CBO) of ACI Limited for a day, symbolically taking over from Quamrul Hasan as part of Plan International Bangladesh’s “Girls Take Over” campaign.
The initiative provided Zafrin with an opportunity to experience leadership at the corporate level, aligned with the International Day of the Girl Child observed on 11 October.
This year’s theme, “The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis,” praised the resilience and leadership of girls, particularly in challenging times.
In Bangladesh, the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs declared the national theme: “Ami Konyashishu, shopno gori, shahose lori, desher kolyane kaj kori,” emphasising the important role of girls in shaping the future of the nation.
Zafrin has long been dedicated to creating change in her community.
She has worked to prevent child marriage, combat child labour, and promote gender equality, becoming a leader among her peers.
Reflecting on her experience, Zafrin said, “Today, I took over as the Chief Business Officer of ACI, and it is one of the proudest moments of my life.”
“Coming from a remote area, this opportunity has inspired me deeply. I believe girls can achieve anything if they are given the right opportunities. I want to see more girls like me step into leadership with confidence and pursue their dreams.”
Zafrin’s efforts go beyond her personal achievements.
She serves as the President of a Child Forum, General Secretary of the Union Child and Youth Network, and Joint General Secretary of the Upazila Child and Youth Network.
In just two years, Zafrin and her peers have stopped six child marriages, helped five children return to school, and conducted various awareness campaigns promoting girls’ education and rights.
Quamrul Hasan, Chief Business Officer of ACI Limited, said, “Sustainable progress is only possible when marginalised communities are part of the development process.
Plan International’s initiative is both timely and inspiring.
When girls take on leadership roles, they shape not only their own futures but also contribute to transforming society.”
Zafrin’s story is a powerful reminder of the potential in young girls when they are given opportunities to lead.
