A teenage girl was killed in a gunfight between two armed groups in Noakhali Para, Baharchhara Union, Teknaf Friday evening.
The victim, Sumaiya Akter, 17, daughter of Md Siddiq Ahmed, was struck by a bullet while at home during the clash, which occurred over human trafficking activities in the hilly area.”
According to local sources, a gang had been holding several people, including Rohingya refugees, captive with the intention of trafficking them by sea.
Around 10 to 12 armed individuals from Ukhiya Rohingya Camp attacked the traffickers’ hideout, prompting a firefight.
Sumaiya sustained a gunshot wound to the chest during the firefight. She was rushed to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced her dead.
Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, confirmed the incident and said a teenage girl was shot during the shootout between two armed groups.
Police are investigating the matter and working to apprehend those responsible, he said, adding that the body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.
Md Ilias, a local Union Parishad member, said the attack occurred while armed men attempted to rescue those held captive. The gunfire lasted about half an hour, spreading panic among residents, he added.
Sumaiya’s father, Siddiq Ahmed, demanded justice, stating, “The hills are increasingly controlled by traffickers, robbers, and drug dealers. My daughter was killed in the crossfire, and the perpetrators must be held accountable.'”
