Bangladesh’s batting coach Mohammad Ashraful has emphasised the importance of team priorities over individual milestones after Mushfiqur Rahim was left unbeaten on 53 in the second innings of the ongoing Test against Ireland at Mirpur.
Mushfiqur, playing his 100th Test, had already made history by scoring a century in the first innings, becoming the first Bangladeshi to reach three figures in a landmark match. He also had the chance to emulate Ricky Ponting, the only cricketer to score centuries in both innings of a 100th Test, after registering a fifty in the second innings. However, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto declared the innings shortly after Mushfiq had batted ten minutes, prioritising the team’s chase for all ten Irish wickets.
Ashraful explained the decision at the fourth-day press conference:
“Since it’s a team game, individual milestones weren’t considered. Personally, I believe individual performance contributes to the team, but we had already reached 500 runs and needed the overs to take all ten Irish wickets. Yes, Mushfiq could have batted for another hour, but it wouldn’t have looked right according to the spirit of cricket. Mominul was close to a century, so he was given the opportunity, but unfortunately he couldn’t achieve it.”
He added, “Everyone got out to good deliveries. There’s nothing to say when that happens. From being with the team, I’ve seen everyone trying to perform well. I was around when Mushfiq made his debut, and I presented Mominul with his Test cap. Alhamdulillah, everyone welcomed me well, and I’m trying to adapt with them.”
Ashraful also highlighted another historic achievement during the series. Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam has surpassed Shakib Al Hasan to become Bangladesh’s highest wicket-taker in Tests with 249 scalps.
“Congratulations to Taijul – 249 wickets. He and Miraz will continue to compete; both are dominating,” said Ashraful. “Hasan Murad made his debut and has bowled well domestically.”
Ashraful felt that Taijul’s contribution often goes underappreciated compared with batting achievements. “It’s a bit unfortunate. Cricket favours batsmen more. Taijul performed while Shakib was around, and now he plays a key role after Shakib left. We discuss such achievements in our team meetings after every game.”
Reflecting on the pitch, Ashraful said: “Looking at this wicket, it reminded me of the 2008 wicket. Batters can play shots on it. This is a very good wicket, conducive for positive cricket.”
Bangladesh’s top order has performed impressively throughout the Ireland series, producing multiple centuries and substantial contributions in both Tests under Ashraful’s coaching. The team’s focus on collective performance has been clear, as highlighted in the decision to prioritise the team’s chances over Mushfiqur’s potential record in the second innings.
