The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is set to introduce artificial intelligence (AI)-based market analysis and procurement systems to improve transparency, efficiency and competition in government purchasing.
The initiative aims to modernise the state-run agency’s operations by using technology to prepare more accurate cost estimates and encourage greater participation in tenders.
Commerce Secretary Ataur Rahman Khan gave the directives at an evaluation meeting on TCB activities held at the Ministry of Commerce.
He said an organisation’s institutional capacity is reflected in its ability to reduce the gap between estimated costs and final contract prices.
The commerce secretary called for detailed data analysis covering domestic and international markets, price trends in neighbouring countries and historical market information to improve procurement decisions.
“Increasing the number of bidders in government procurement is essential to ensure the best use of public funds and prevent monopolistic practices,” he said.
A concept note has already been prepared to introduce AI-based analysis in market management and procurement. A committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Commerce, TCB, Finance Division and technology experts will be formed to develop a roadmap for the initiative.
TCB Chairman Brigadier General Foysal Azad said the organisation also plans to integrate its Smart Family Card with other government service databases to improve consumer services.
He said TCB has already invited tenders through the electronic government procurement (e-GP) system to introduce point-of-sale (POS) machines, which will enable faster and more transparent transactions through card scanning.
As part of the modernisation plan, TCB will establish model stores in Barishal, Rajshahi and Dhaka.
The corporation also plans to expand its consumer product basket by adding more essential items. Officials said products such as soap and detergent may be sold alongside subsidised goods, but purchasing those items will remain completely optional for consumers.
The meeting, attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce’s WTO cell and International Trade and Investment wing, concluded with a commitment to strengthen TCB’s supply chain and digital infrastructure.
