As Malaysians gather at Ramadan bazaars and breaking-fast events, the Health Ministry has urged the public to observe tuberculosis (TB) precautions, particularly in crowded and enclosed spaces.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry reported 596 new TB cases nationwide during the sixth epidemiological week from 8-14 February, bringing the cumulative total to 3,161 cases, reports The Star.
It said, “Crowded, enclosed and poorly ventilated spaces increase the risk of transmission, especially if an individual with untreated active TB is present.”
It added that Ramadan itself is not a cause of TB transmission, though increased social interaction during the month may raise exposure risks.
The ministry emphasised that community awareness and proactive measures are vital for early detection, effective treatment, and prevention of TB spread. It noted, “With collective action, we can ensure a safe and healthy Ramadan for all.”
Unlike influenza or Covid-19, TB spreads more slowly and typically requires prolonged, repeated exposure.
The public has been advised to practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette, maintain good indoor ventilation, wear masks if symptomatic or in crowded areas, and seek medical attention for coughs lasting more than two weeks or other TB-related symptoms.
Case breakdowns show Sabah recorded the highest number with 755, followed by Selangor with 596 and Sarawak with 332. Johor reported 280 cases, while Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya together recorded 244. Kedah registered 181, Penang 172, and Perak 154. Kelantan reported 121, Pahang 103, Terengganu 74, and Negeri Sembilan 62. Melaka saw 48 cases, Perlis 21, and Labuan the lowest with 18.
