After more than 22 years, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman is set to visit Thakurgaon on 12 January. He last visited there in 2003 for a blanket distribution programme.
Ahead of Tarique’s visit, widespread enthusiasm is prevailing among party leaders and activists at all levels in the district.
BNP’s Thakurgaon district unit General Secretary Poygam Ali said, “Tarique Rahman will come to Thakurgaon by road next Monday (12 January) and stay at the guest house of the Buro Bangladesh Training Centre in the city. Therefore, the exact time of his arrival in the town cannot be specified at this moment.”
Poygam Ali also said that next Tuesday he will visit the grave of Al Mamun around 10am, who was killed in the July mass uprising. He will join the remembrance and prayer congregation for BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at the Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School grounds around 11am.
There, he will address the party leaders and activists. Upon concluding the programme, he will depart for the neighbouring district of Panchagarh the same day.
He further said, “His return after 22 long years is a matter of great joy for the party leaders and activists. We have held several preparatory meetings on this occasion. We have informed the administration regarding security matters.
“Although there is no opportunity for a large public rally due to the electoral code of conduct, we are prepared to successfully carry out the programme through the prayer congregation in memory of former prime minister Khaleda Zia.”
Tarique Rahman will also visit Rangpur, Dinajpur and Panchagarh.
Thakurgaon’s Superintendent of Police Belal Hossain said that on the occasion of Tarique Rahman’s visit, all necessary measures have been taken by the police administration to maintain law and order. Police are on alert to prevent any kind of untoward incident, he added.
