BNP chairman Tarique Rahman stopped to speak with people gathered outside his Gulshan residence on Friday, expressing gratitude for their support and seeking prayers following his party’s sweeping victory in the 13th parliamentary election.
He left his residence around noon to offer Jumma prayers at the Bangladesh Navy Headquarters Mosque, where he later joined a doa and milad programme.
As he came out in his car, a large number of curious onlookers gathered on the street. Tarique briefly halted his vehicle, stepped out and spoke with several people, asking about their identities and exchanging greetings.
Many from the crowd said they wanted to stand by him in building a “new Bangladesh”. Thanking them, Tarique said he was grateful for the love and support shown to him and requested their prayers.
He waved to the gathering, while people responded with greetings, creating a brief crowd on the road.
The interaction came the day after the parliamentary election and referendum were held. The BNP, led by Tarique Rahman, is set to form the next government after securing more than a two-third majority of seats.
Tarique contested from Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 and won both constituencies. With this victory, the BNP is returning to power after nearly two decades. As leader of the party, he is set to become prime minister. Formalities for government formation are expected to begin within the next few days.
