The Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi has long carried a reputation for being pace-friendly. But a quick look at the ground’s highest wicket-takers tells a different story, three of the top five are spinners. Surprising, isn’t it?
So, how is Abu Dhabi still considered seamer-friendly? Traditionally, new-ball bowlers extract some swing under lights in day-night matches. Early on, wickets can offer seam movement, but the bounce remains true and even, not quite the out-and-out pace haven of Perth or South African venues. As the ball gets older, fast bowlers often rely on variations rather than raw speed.
On a humid Thursday evening, in the third match of the Asia Cup, young pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib followed that exact pattern against Hong Kong, China. He relied on his express pace, mixed up his deliveries with pace variations, and banged in some really good bouncers.
Introduced in the third over, he began with a 138 km/h Jaffa that kissed the perfect length. The next five deliveries landed in the same channel, keeping Hong Kong’s batters on edge with sharp seam movement.
In his second over, Babar Hayat was nearly bowled by an angling back-of-a-length delivery, surviving by inches. A ball later, Babar countered with a six, but Tanzim hit back immediately—rattling the middle stump with a pinpoint yorker. He completed the over as a wicket-maiden, a fast bowler’s delight.
Returning for his second spell, Tanzim struck again. A well-set Zeeshan Ali miscued a short ball, cramped for room by extra bounce. The ball popped towards short mid-wicket, where Mustafizur Rahman ran back and completed a superb over-the-shoulder catch.
Tanzim wrapped up with figures of 4-1-21-2, including 15 dot balls. His fiery spell choked Hong Kong’s scoring rate, and they limped to 143/7 after 20 overs. Captain Nizakat Khan top-scored with 42 off 40 balls.
Alongside Tanzim, Taskin Ahmed and Rishad Hossain also made their mark. Taskin struck early, removing opener Anshy Rath in the second over with an edge to Litton Das behind the stumps. In his final over, he deceived Aizaz Khan with a slower ball that was skied to fine leg, where Jaker Ali settled comfortably under the catch.
Rishad added to the tally with a brilliant direct hit at the non-striker’s end for the fourth wicket. He later capped his spell in style, claiming Nizakat Khan and Kinchit Shah in his last over to finish with 4-0-31-2.
