An election office in Gopalpur, Tangail, has been attacked and vandalised, with allegations pointing to BNP leaders and activists. Four people, including the district election officer, were injured in the incident.

The attack took place around 11am on Monday at the Upazila Election Office.

According to sources at the Upazila Election Office, 30 to 40 activists of BNP and its affiliated organisations suddenly entered the office on Monday morning and attacked the election officer. Two other staff members were also assaulted. During the attack, the office was vandalised and important documents were torn.

Gopalpur Upazila Assistant Election Officer Abu Raihan said, “Four people, including the Upazila Election Officer, were injured. A group of middlemen may have carried out the attack as they were unable to secure benefits.”

Senior District Election Officer Mohammad Tajul Islam said the matter had been reported to higher authorities.

“A case will be filed for vandalising a government office and physically assaulting a government official. Preparations to file the case are underway,” he said.

Gopalpur Upazila BNP General Secretary Kazi Liaquat denied the allegations.

“The election officer is involved in various irregularities, corruption and unethical activities. We went to his office with victims based on complaints, and he behaved extremely rudely. But the allegations of attack and vandalism are false,” he said.

Tangail Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman said police had inspected the scene.

“The government office was vandalised and officials were physically assaulted. Legal action will be taken once a written complaint is filed,” he said.
