Owners of petrol pumps and CNG refuelling stations across Sylhet division called off their indefinite strike on Thursday after about 14 hours, following assurances from the administration.

Humayun Ahmed, general secretary of the Sylhet divisional unit of the Bangladesh Petroleum Dealers, Distribution Agents and Petroleum Owners Association, announced the decision around 2pm on Thursday following a meeting with local authorities.

He said the decision to end the strike was taken after the administration assured that pump owners would not face harassment. Fuel and gas supply at all petrol pumps and CNG stations in the division resumed immediately, he added.

Earlier, pump owners held talks with the administration around 11:30am to discuss the situation. The meeting was chaired by Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam and attended by Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury, Superintendent of Police Chowdhury Md Zaber Sadeq, and leaders of relevant organisations.

The strike had been called late Wednesday night in protest against what owners described as “unjust fines” and various forms of harassment, leading to the closure of all petrol pumps in the division.
