Journalist Syed Abdal Ahmed has been appointed the principal information officer of the Press Information Department (PID) on a one-year contract.
The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification on Sunday, confirming his appointment on a contractual basis for a period of one year with the status of Grade-1.
According to the terms of the appointment, Ahmad must relinquish his professional ties with any other organisations or professions to assume this responsibility.
Syed Abdal Ahmed is currently the executive editor of the Daily Amar Desh and acting editor of the children’s monthly magazine, Tuntuni.
In his distinguished professional career, Ahmad served as the Deputy Press Secretary to former prime minister Khaleda Zia between 1992 and 1996. He has also held the position of general secretary of the National Press Club for two terms.
Additionally, he has contributed as a member of the media reform commission established by the interim government.
Born in Brahmanbaria in 1962, Ahmad completed his education in Habiganj before obtaining his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Chemistry from Jahangirnagar University. His journey in journalism began in 1982 as a university reporter for Dainik Bangla, where he remained in various roles until 1997. He later worked for several prominent media outlets, including the national news agency BSS, Dainik Janakantha, Dainik Dinkal, and Saptahik Bichitra.
For his contributions to investigative journalism, Ahmad was honoured with the Philips Award and the ESCAP-FEJB Award in 1989.
More recently, in 2025, the Dhaka Reporters Unity conferred upon him a Lifetime Achievement Award.
A life member of the Bangla Academy, Syed Abdal Ahmad is a prolific writer with over 20 books to his credit. His notable works include Nondito Netri Khaleda Zia, Kingbadantir Zia, Mohan Bhasha Andolon, Nobiji (sa.), Gonotantrer Songgram, Buriganga Tirer Rohosyonogori, Chirokaler Chhora Kobita, Jolobayu Poriborton, Jolochor Adure Prani Dolphin, Paris Eiffel Tower Monalisa, Tuntunir Golpo, and Bijoy O Swadhinata.
