Suvendu Adhikari is set to take office as West Bengal’s first chief minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday, after being unanimously chosen as leader of the BJP legislature party.
The swearing-in ceremony has been arranged at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, reports Anandabazar.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are expected to attend the event. Tight security measures have been put in place in and around the Brigade area ahead of the ceremony.
Adhikari’s ascent to the chief ministership follows his dual electoral victories over TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee. After defeating her in Nandigram in 2021, he challenged her in her own constituency of Bhawanipur this time, winning by a margin of over 15,000 votes.
Additionally, he defeated TMC candidate Pabitro Kar in Nandigram by approximately 10,000 votes.
