The Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) has arrested four suspects in connection with the murder of Md Azizur Rahman Musabbir at Tejturi Bazar in the capital.
Those arrested are – Zinnat, 24; Md Billal; Abdul Qadir, 28; and Md Riaz, 31. At a press conference held at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday, Additional Police Commissioner (DB) Md Shafiqul Islam stated that the DB is working to unearth the full mystery of this incident.
On Thursday around 8:30pm, assailants fired shots with the intent to kill Md Azizur Rahman Musabbir, 44, the former general secretary (Dhaka Metropolitan North) of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, in an alley beside Hotel Super Star in West Tejturi Para.
Two people, including Musabbir, were shot in the incident. The injured were immediately taken to a local hospital, where the attending doctors declared Md Azizur Rahman Musabbir dead and referred Sufiyan Bepari Masud, 40, to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.
The victim’s wife filed a murder case at Tejgaon Police Station against four to five unknown accused. The case was then transferred to the Detective Branch for intensive investigation.
DB sources said immediately after the incident, DB began working to identify and arrest those involved and uncover the motive for the murder. Several DB teams analysed CCTV footage from the scene and reviewed information from eyewitnesses, enabling them to identify those involved.
Multiple operational teams of the DB then conducted a series of raids in different locations in Dhaka, Manikganj, Mymensingh, and Netrokona districts on Saturday, arresting Zinnat, one of the two shooters in the murder; the main coordinator, Md Billal; Abdul Qadir, who assisted the accused in hiding after the incident; and Md Riaz, who recced the location.
At that time, a number-plateless motorcycle used in the killing and Tk 6,000 in cash were recovered from their possession.
Operations are ongoing to trace the source of the firearms used in the incident and recover them. Legal action is underway against the arrested accused, and operations to arrest the fugitives are continue.
