The cast of Supernatural drew thunderous applause at CCXP in São Paulo on Thursday, where a long-awaited reunion took an unexpected political turn.
Former cast members Misha Collins, Kathryn Newton, Jim Beaver and Rob Benedict were joined by director Richard Speight Jr. to mark nearly 20 years since the cult series debuted in 2006. Noticeably absent were Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who played the demon-hunting Winchester brothers throughout the show’s 15-season run, which concluded in 2020.
The convention floor at the São Paulo Expo was packed with fans eager to celebrate the series. The crowd erupted into song during the panel’s introduction as they belted out Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son,” the classic rock tune that became synonymous with the show.
Collins, best known for his role as the angel Castiel, joked about the warm reception. “When we’re back home in the US, nobody pays any attention to us anymore,” he said. “But here, there must be a lag or something because you still know what Supernatural is.”
Later, a fan question prompted the moment that electrified the room. Newton, who portrayed Claire Novak, was asked what type of monster she would most like to battle and chose dragons. Collins then used the opportunity to aim a jab at US president Donald Trump.
“Do you mean what kind of evil monster we would want to go up against?” he asked, before adding, “I think it would be fun to take on Donald Trump.”
The remark sparked loud cheers, prompting Collins to say, “We have found our people. So, not a big MAGA crowd here?” The moderator quickly moved on to a video presentation.
Earlier in the panel, Newton shared her thoughts on where Claire’s story might have gone if she had received a spin-off. “I am sure Claire is out there, still kicking arse and taking names,” she said. “There are always monsters, and someone always has to hunt them.”
