Summit, the largest infrastructure conglomerate in Bangladesh, has announced the extension of its Livelihood Enhancement Project (LEP) in Moheshkhali, a move aimed at further improving the livelihoods of local communities.
Building on the success of the first phase, Summit has committed to extending the project for an additional year, with the program running through to September 2026.
The first phase of LEP was implemented between 2020 and 2024 in collaboration with Young Power in Social Action (YPSA).
The project provided skills development for 1,591 beneficiaries, focusing primarily on small-scale fishermen from the Ghotibhanga, Sonadia, Tajiakata, and Nayapara areas. The initiative disbursed approximately Tk1 crore in grants, helping to enhance the livelihoods of local communities.
As part of the project, men received vocational training in boat repair, along with toolkits, enabling them to earn an average monthly income of Tk9,000 to Tk12,000. Women, on the other hand, were trained in tailoring and the use of electric sewing machines.
Additionally, they learned how to weave fish nets and use solar tents for drying fish, an environmentally friendly method known as “Shutki.” Women were also provided with fishing gear, which they could rent out for additional income.
In addition to skills training, SLNG undertook a comprehensive renovation of the Sonadia Government Primary School, investing approximately Tk 40 lakh. The renovation was completed and handed over to the Upazila Education Officer (UEO).
The event was attended by key officials from both Summit and YPSA. From SLNG, Md Sayedul Alam, Managing Director & CEO, Mohammed Shamsul Alam, Advisor, Md Rafiqul Islam, Sr Manager, and Md Mehedi Hasan Ovi, Deputy Manager, EHS, were present. From YPSA, Dr Md Arifur Rahman, Founder and Chief Executive, Nasim Banu, Director, Social Development Department, and Md Nazmul Haider, Assistant Director, attended the signing ceremony.
