Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officers on duty have been issued special directives regarding mobile phone use.
According to an order issued by the Bangladesh Police Headquarters, no police officer, except for the in-charge, is allowed to use or browse mobile phones while on duty. Violation of this order will be considered a disciplinary offense, and action will be taken according to regulations.
The office order, signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali, was issued on Monday. This directive comes at a time when reports of crude bomb explosions have been coming from various parts of Dhaka.
The Awami League has been organising flash processions in different locations, while there has been a surge in discussions regarding the “lockdown” announcement, both at tea stalls and on social media.
The order stated that the recent increase in police officers browsing mobile phones while on duty is a cause for concern, as it is disrupting their vigilance and duties. As a result, despite their visible presence, they have been unable to ensure the safety of both themselves and the public.
With the 13th National Parliamentary Election approaching, the order emphasises the importance of ensuring a peaceful election environment, maintaining law and order, and effectively preventing the activities of banned organisations.
