A special team of the army-led joint forces arrested Mehedi Hasan, alias Dipu, the second-in-command to notorious top terrorist Subrata Bain, from the Bepari Para area of Moddhoe Badda in Dhaka on Friday.
Acting on a tip-off, the joint forces raided a third-floor flat in a building owned by the suspect, where they recovered 11 sophisticated foreign firearms and 394 rounds of ammunition.
In addition to the firearms, the team seized eight pistol magazines, 32 cartridges, one 22 Uzis ubmachine gun with two magazines, three Chinese axes, a Tiger Hunting Commando knife, two walkie-talkies with a battery, three pistol side covers, and a laptop.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner Asaduzzaman confirmed that the arrest and recovery took place on Friday.
On Saturday, Sub-Inspector Md Hasanur Rahman of Badda Police Station filed a case against Mehedi Hasan under the Arms Act. Following the filing of the case, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin granted a five-day remand for the suspect’s interrogation,.
Police sources revealed that Dipu had been controlling the criminal underworld in Rampura, Banasree, Badda, Vatara, Baridhara, and Gulshan on behalf of Subrata Bain. He was allegedly involved in the long-term sale of illegal firearms and ammunition across various areas of the capital, including Badda and Vatara.
Furthermore, investigations indicate that Mehedi Hasan extorted hundreds of thousands of taka daily from a fish wholesale market in Merul Badda. His criminal activities also extended to controlling extortion rackets targeting car showrooms and garment factories, as well as dominating the jhoot (scrap fabric) business.
Police also believe that Dipu and his associates may be hiding additional weapons belonging to another top terrorist, Molla Masud.
