The High Court has directed the Buet vice chancellor to submit a report on the earthquake resilience of the Supreme Court buildings.
He must submit the report within 10 days after inspecting the Supreme Court buildings, the court said.
Following a preliminary hearing of a writ petition on Monday, the HC bench comprising Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Md Asif Hasan passed the order.
SC lawyer Golam Kibria filed the petition seeking directives to take necessary measures for the safety of the court buildings in the context of earthquakes. He filed the petition as a public interest litigation.
He also sought HC directives to introduce an alarming system in the case of tremors.
In the petition, four respondents including secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, chief engineer of the Public Works Department, and registrar general of the SC.
The move came following several earthquakes that struck the country recently.
On Friday, an earthquake shook the capital and surrounding areas at 10:38am. During the tremor, many people rushed outside in panic, while some even jumped from buildings. As a result, 10 people, including children, were killed and many people were injured.
Another tremor was felt on Saturday morning and two more occurred consecutively in the evening.
