Student’s body found hanging in room at JU

A student has been found dead, hanging by the neck, in room No 413 of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq Hall at Jahangirnagar University (JU).

The deceased is Arup Ratan Konishka, a student of the 50th batch (2020-21 session) of the university’s Archaeology Department. Konishka’s hometown is in Narayanganj district.

His hanging body was recovered from room No 413 of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq Hall at around 2:30pm on Wednesday.

Md Nazrul Islam, provost of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq Hall, said, “We learned about the incident around 2:20pm. As soon as we got the news, we informed the university administration and the police. When we arrived at the hall, we found his room locked and saw his body hanging inside. The police had already arrived at the scene. Later, with the help of police, in the presence of the hall administration and the proctorial body, the body was brought down.”

He further stated, “We have informed his relatives and guardians; they are on their way. Initially, the medical officer’s report and the police report have described the incident as a suicide.”

Regarding the matter, Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector Shekhar Chandra Mallik said, “The incident appears to be a suicide. The body will be sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Preliminary indications suggest the incident may have occurred approximately 10–12 hours ago. However, a definitive statement can only be made after the final autopsy report and a complete investigation.”

A residential student of the hall, Swapno, said, “He could not be reached by phone since morning. Later, around 2pm, when we knocked on his room door, there was no response from inside. Then, accompanied by another person, I broke a window pane and looked inside, where we saw Konishka’s body hanging from the ceiling fan.”
