Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has remarked that the experience gained from student union elections at universities will contribute towards conducting the upcoming national parliamentary election in a free, fair, impartial, and secure manner.
The adviser stated this while briefing journalists after a meeting on the overall preparations and law and order situation regarding the RUCSU and CUCSU elections-2025, held in the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Secretariat on Thursday.
The adviser stated that the DUCSU and JUCSU elections have already been held impartially and peacefully, and that the RUCSU and CUCSU elections will be held soon. He mentioned that today’s meeting was attended by the vice-chancellors, proctors, and chief election commissioners of Dhaka, Jahangirnagar, Rajshahi, and Chittagong Universities.
Discussions and exchanges of experiences took place with them, the home adviser said. They are among the most highly educated in Bangladesh, and those who will vote in the student union elections are also highly educated. He added, “Since our national parliamentary election will be held in February, we are gaining some experience from observing these elections. Today’s meeting was held to share how that experience can be applied in the national election. Additionally, since two student union elections have already been held, we discussed how to address minor errors from those elections.”
Jahangir Alam added, “The valuable suggestions on elections that emerged in today’s meeting will be implemented in the future,” noting that among the recommendations discussed, of significance were determining the number of polling centres, establishing the vote-counting process, and how to use indelible ink.
Additionally, discussions covered ensuring prompt announcement of election results, photo-ID cards for voters at polling centres, and preparing a transparent voter list.
The home adviser stated that the two institutions (RUCSU and CUCSU) have no concerns regarding the elections. It is expected that both elections will be conducted fairly, securely, and peacefully. He emphasised that cooperation from all parties is essential for ensuring fair elections.
At this time, he requested journalists to observe the elections and sought cooperation from all involved.
Education Adviser Professor Dr CR Abrar was present at the briefing.
