Bangladesh’s capital market closed in green last week, with the benchmark index of the country’s premier bourse increasing by 2.66 per cent over the past five trading sessions.
The DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock exchange (DSE), rose 142.98 points to close at 5,517.95 points. The DS30, which represents blue chip stocks, edged up 67.55 points, or 3.23 per cent, to 2,156.99 points.
Similarly, the DSES, comprised of shariah-compliant scrips, rose by 26.87 points, or 2.28 per cent, to close at 1,207.20 points.
The week saw an average daily turnover of Tk11.5 billion, marking a week-on-week increase of 26.3 per cent. The total turnover for the week was Tk57.3 billion.
The market had started the week positively on Sunday, gaining 0.26 per cent, and continued with another positive session on Monday (1.23 per cent).
However, it faced some setbacks on Tuesday, losing 0.12 per cent, and also shed 0.10 per cent on Wednesday. Despite this, the week ended on a high note, with a gain of 1.37 per cent on Thursday.
In terms of sector performance, all financial sectors posted positive gains. Life insurance led the charge with a significant gain of 10.19 per cent followed by general insurance (5.30 per cent), banks (1.71 per cent), mutual funds (1.34 per cent), and NBFIs (0.82 per cent).
The non-financial sectors also saw positive results, with fuel and power recording the highest gain of 3.75 per cent. Other sectors, such as pharmaceuticals (2.57 per cent), telecommunication (2.07 per cent), engineering (1.48 per cent), and food and allied (1.10 per cent), ended the week in positive territory.
