Indian actress Sreeja Dutta, who previously starred opposite Dev in the film ‘Bagha Jatin’, has joined a Dhaka production with the upcoming web film ‘Tajmahal’, set for release on the OTT platform Bongo this Eid.
Sreeja, who made her big-screen debut alongside Dev in Bagha Jatin, later appeared in ‘Tekka’ and played a lead role in the Hoichoi series ‘Nishir Daak’, where her performance received praise from viewers.
The actress travelled to Dhaka amid the pressure of her final year engineering studies to complete shooting for Tajmahal, directed by Wahid Anam. She stars opposite actor Faizul Yamin, known for ‘Pressure Cooker’.
Speaking about how she became involved in the project, Sreeja said, “There had been communication from before and I was receiving offers. Eventually, the opportunity came to work opposite Faizul Yamin.”
According to the filmmakers, Tajmahal tells a story of love that cannot be stopped by borders or partition.
Reflecting on her experience in Bangladesh, Sreeja said, “Bangladesh is peaceful. People here love Indians very much. They do not know how best to host or feed you. Everyone is incredibly warm.”
She also shared that she nearly missed her return flight to Kolkata after taking the wrong route to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. The actress said she had to return urgently because of an examination scheduled the following day, although she eventually managed to catch the flight.
Sreeja expressed disappointment at not being able to try Padma hilsa during her short visit, though she did enjoy kacchi biryani instead. Her mother also accompanied her to Dhaka, and the two purchased Dhakai jamdani sarees before returning home.
The film was shot in the Sylhet region, where Sreeja had to learn the local dialect for her role. “Bangladesh’s entertainment industry is moving forward very quickly. Tajmahal is being released within less than a month after filming wrapped,” she said.
The actress added that audiences would appreciate her on-screen pairing with Faizul Yamin. “Our work together has turned out really well,” she said.
The project also marks the return of director Wahid Anam after an 11-year break from directing. Previously known for television dramas and telefilms, he has now moved into OTT content production.
Over the years, Wahid Anam became known for portraying realistic depictions of society and everyday life, particularly stories centred on rural communities, women’s struggles and social exploitation.
His telefilms ‘Pari’, ‘Chhinno’ and ‘Chokro’, his last directorial work based on human trafficking, had drawn significant attention from audiences and critics alike.
