Spain’s World Cup celebrations took an unusual turn after Gavi and Fabian Ruiz received tomatoes instead of cash during a traditional homecoming ceremony.
The pair were honoured by the Los Palacios City Council after helping Spain defeat Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, ending the country’s 16-year wait for another world title.
While many World Cup-winning teams receive large financial bonuses and government rewards, Los Palacios chose a prize rooted in local tradition.
The city welcomed Gavi and Fabian with one of its most distinctive customs by presenting each player with tomatoes equal to their body weight.
The ceremony reflected the town’s strong agricultural identity, with tomato farming playing a central role in the local economy. Rather than offering lavish gifts, the council celebrated its football heroes with a symbolic honour closely linked to the community.
Spain’s squad has received a series of celebrations since returning from the United States, including a victory parade through Madrid attended by more than one million supporters.
However, the tribute in Los Palacios stood out as one of the most unique moments of the post-World Cup celebrations.
For Gavi and Fabian, the tomatoes may not match the value of a cash bonus, but they represent a heartfelt gesture from their hometown and a tradition that connects sporting success with local pride.
