October 12 marks Spain’s National Day, a celebration of the country’s history, heritage, and global diplomatic engagements. In the context of Bangladesh, Spain is not only a developed European nation, but also a long-standing, sincere, and strategic partner with whom our relationship has grown stronger and more multi-dimensional over time.
Diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Spain began in February 1972, shortly after Bangladesh’s independence. As one of the first Western European countries to recognise Bangladesh, Spain laid the foundation for a future of strong bilateral ties. For over fifty years, the two nations have closely collaborated in areas such as education, culture, trade, and international cooperation.
Notably, in the area of trade, Spain has proven to be one of Bangladesh’s most reliable partners. Within the European Union, Spain is now one of Bangladesh’s top export destinations. In the fiscal year 2024–25 alone, Bangladesh imported goods worth USD 160 million from Spain, while exports to Spain totalled USD 3.57 billion -resulting in a trade surplus of USD 3.41 billion in Bangladesh’s favour. The major imports include cotton, machinery, zinc etc, while the key export is garments. This clearly demonstrates how vital Spain is for Bangladesh’s apparel sector. Large Spanish companies such as Inditex (which owns the Zara brand) and Mango are among the top buyers from Bangladesh.
In today’s global trade landscape, where Bangladesh often has trade deficits with most countries, such significant exports to a country like Spain are especially meaningful. It undoubtedly proves that Spain is a genuine friend of Bangladesh’s export sector.
But the depth of this relationship goes far beyond trade. Investment cooperation between the two countries is also expanding rapidly. In sectors like renewable energy, infrastructure development, tourism, and technology, the expertise and experience of Spanish companies can add a new dimension to Bangladesh’s development journey. Bangladesh is working towards generating 10% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025 a goal where Spain, a leader in solar and wind energy, can be an effective partner.
There is also scope for cooperation in tourism and hospitality. As one of the world’s leading tourist destinations, Spain’s experience can play a vital role in developing Bangladesh’s tourism infrastructure. Joint ventures can be explored in hotel management, resort development, and tourism training.
Although the number of Spanish nationals residing in Bangladesh is relatively small, the Bangladeshi migrant community in Spain is well-organized, hardworking, and respected. They are mostly employed in agriculture, construction, restaurants, and transportation. The image of Bangladeshis in Spanish society is positive, and the Spanish government has taken a sympathetic stance on immigration issues. As a result, this migrant community serves as a bridge of cultural and human connection between the two nations.
Exchange in education and culture is also increasing. Interest in learning Spanish is growing in Bangladesh, and several universities now offer Spanish language courses. On the other hand, there is a rising interest in Bangladeshi music, cuisine, and literature in Spain. Participation of Bangladeshi artists in international festivals, cultural weeks, and joint programs are making this relationship more humane and vibrant.
Academic exchange is also strengthening the knowledge-based ties between the two countries. More Bangladeshi students are now enrolling in Spanish universities, especially in fields such as tourism, environmental science, and technology.
In global forums such as the United Nations, both Spain and Bangladesh share common goals and mindsets on issues like peace, climate change, human rights, and sustainable development. These shared values have shaped a diplomatic relationship based not only on political courtesy but also on practical cooperation and mutual respect.
On this National Day, we extend our heartfelt greetings and congratulations to the government and people of Spain from Bangladesh. The relationship between Bangladesh and Spain has now evolved into a comprehensive diplomatic, economic, and humanitarian partnership. We firmly believe that this relationship will grow deeper, become more action-oriented, and play an even more vital role in the welfare of the people of both nations.
