Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza which collapsed in 2013 claiming at least 1,136 lives, was granted parole for one and a half hours to attend his mother’s namaz-e-janaza on Saturday.
Rana, also a former Jubo League leader, was released from Gazipur’s Kashimpur Jail under police escort around 6pm.
After his release, he joined the funeral prayers at Madrasa Mosque in Savar municipality. During the ceremony, Rana sought forgiveness from those present for his past mistakes.
He said, “Please pray for my mother and forgive me for my mistakes.”
Rana’s cousin, Jahangir Alam, said his mother, Marzina Begum, had been battling cancer for a long time and passed away on Friday night while receiving treatment at LabAid Hospital in Dhaka.
Following his parole application, Rana was brought to Savar by police around 6pm. After the janaza, he returned to prison at 7:30pm. Officers from Savar Model Police Station were also present during the proceedings.
