Universal Pictures has set 6 August 2027 as the theatrical release date for Snoop, the upcoming biographical film based on the life and career of rap icon Snoop Dogg, according to Deadline.
The film will replace an untitled Universal event film previously scheduled for the same release slot.
Snoop will chronicle the rise of the rapper, entrepreneur and hip-hop star from his early years to becoming one of the most recognisable figures in music.
Filmmaker Craig Brewer, known for Song Sung Blue and Hustle & Flow, will direct the project from his revised screenplay based on an earlier script by Joe Robert Cole. Jonathan Daviss, best known for Outer Banks, will portray Snoop Dogg in the lead role.
The film marks the first production under Death Row Pictures’ overall agreement with NBCUniversal Entertainment. Producers include Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment, Snoop Dogg, and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker. The soundtrack will feature music from Snoop Dogg’s extensive catalogue.
Universal has enjoyed major success with music biopics in recent years. The studio handled international distribution for Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic that has surpassed $1 billion at the global box office. It also released Straight Outta Compton, the N.W.A biopic that earned $201.6 million worldwide, and 8 Mile, Eminem’s semi-autobiographical drama, which grossed $242.8 million globally, Deadline reported.
The release calendar for the same weekend also includes Jason Statham Stole My Bike from Black Bear on 7 August, while Disney is preparing to release its untitled Bluey film.
