Police recovered the hanging body of a sub-inspector’s wife from a residence in the capital’s Sabujbagh area on Saturday morning.
The deceased, identified as Nilufar Yasmin, 29, was the daughter of Nur Islam from Roumari upazila in Kurigram.
According to police sources, the body was recovered around 9:30am from a rented apartment on the third floor of a building opposite the Southgaon Shahibagh Mosque. Nilufar’s husband, Anwar Hossain, is a police sub-inspector currently stationed at the Gazipur Police Lines.
Sabujbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Fatema, who conducted the inquest report, stated that the couple had been married for 14 years and had two children. While their son lives away at a madrasa for his education, Nilufar resided in the Southgaon flat with their younger daughter.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Nilufar had been suffering from mental depression and frequently worried over minor issues. SI Fatema noted that she was particularly distressed because her son was reportedly not focusing on his studies at the madrasa.
Police suspect that Nilufar may have committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan with a scarf between 4:30am and 8:30am on Saturday.
The body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
