Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested an accused in the murder case of Rezaul Karim, secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Sreebardi upazila unit, who was killed in a clash in Sherpur.
Mahmudul Hasan Rubel, 34, was arrested late Monday from a wetland in Bongao area of Jhenaigati upazila.
Rubel serves as joint convener of Jhenaigati unit of BNP’s volunteer wing, Jatiyotabadi Swechchhasebak Dal. He was listed as the 55th accused in the case.
Police said acting on a tip-off, a DB team led by Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Nalitabari circle) Afsan-al-Alam conducted a raid in Bongao and later arrested Rubel.
Sherpur Additional Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan confirmed the arrest. He said the accused will be produced before a local court on Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, Sherpur district unit of Swechchhasebak Dal condemned and protested the arrest. In a statement, its convener Md Mamunur Rashid Mamun and member secretary Md Niyamul Hasan Ananda alleged that such actions were aimed at obstructing the upcoming national election and obstruct democratic progress.
The leaders urged immediate withdrawal of what they termed a “false and fabricated case” filed by Jamaat-e-Islami and demanded Rubel’s unconditional release.
On 30 January, the victim’s wife filed the case with Jhenaigati Police Station, naming BNP candidate Mahmudul Haque Rubel as the prime accused, and 231 others. Around 400–500 unidentified people were also made accused in the case.
