The court has granted a six-day remand for former Director General of the Defence Intelligence Directorate (DGFI), Lieutenant General (Retd.) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, in the murder case of Delwar Hossain filed at Mirpur Model Police Station.
The remand was granted today, Tuesday, by the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana.
During the hearing, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi represented the state. He told the court, “Sheikh Mamun Khaled was a highly trusted associate of Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Mamun Khaled used to implement Sheikh Hasina’s night-time voting. Under his planning and directives, shots were fired at students during the July movement. His remand is necessary for the investigation of the case.”
On the other side, defece lawyer Morshed Shahin opposed the remand application and filed a bail petition.
With the court’s permission, the accused, Sheikh Mamun Khaled, said, “I am a teacher. I have taught throughout my career. I have served as vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor. Being a teacher myself, how could I order shots to be fired at students? This allegation is false.”
He also told the court, “They interrogated me for 120 hours. I was asked absurd questions. After 120 hours of interrogation, what more could they possibly ask me?”
After hearing both sides, the court granted a six-day remand.
Earlier, Mamun Khaled was detained by the Detective Branch (DB) from an area in the capital late at night on Wednesday.
Mamun Khaled served as Director of the Counter Intelligence Bureau (CIB) of DGFI during the later period of the army-controlled caretaker government in 2007-08.
He remained in the same position after the Awami League government came to power. Later, he became Director General of DGFI. He served as Director General of DGFI from 2011 to 2013.
