The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce has sought details on the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh’s (TCB) subsidy policy and the Bangladesh Competition Commission’s activities over the past decade.
The issues were discussed at the committee’s first meeting of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday, according to a parliament secretariat press release.
Committee Chairman Md Khaled Hossain Mahbub chaired the meeting, which was attended by Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir and other committee members.
The committee held an introductory session with officials from the Ministry of Commerce and its subordinate agencies and was briefed on their activities.
During discussions on the Bangladesh Competition Commission, the committee recommended that detailed information on the commission’s institutional expenditure over the past 10 years, the amount of fines collected and cases pending disposal be presented at the next meeting.
The committee also discussed the TCB’s operations, including reducing the government’s subsidy burden, the process of appointing dealers and related policies.
Commerce Ministry Secretary, Bangladesh Competition Commission Chairman, additional secretaries of the ministry, and relevant officials of the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat were present at the meeting.
