Bangladesh midfielder Shamit Shome could be heading for one of football’s most famous club names, with reports linking him with New York Cosmos after his departure from Cavalry FC.
Social media reports claim Shome has signed for the American club, which currently plays in the third tier of the United States football pyramid. Neither Shome nor Cosmos, however, has officially confirmed the move.
A switch to Cosmos would give Shome a new chapter in a club whose history carries extraordinary weight.
Cosmos became a global football name in the 1970s when Brazilian legend Pele joined the club. The three-time World Cup winner spent the 1975 and 1976 seasons in New York and helped turn the club into one of the biggest names in the sport.
German great Franz Beckenbauer also wore the Cosmos shirt during the same era.
Shome would arrive after spending three seasons with Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC. The club confirmed his departure in January ahead of the 2026 season.
The 29-year-old was born in Canada and represented the country twice in international friendlies before changing his allegiance to Bangladesh.
He obtained Bangladeshi citizenship last year and made his Bangladesh debut in June 2025 during the third round of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.
Shome scored his first international goal around four months later in Bangladesh’s 4-3 defeat by Hong Kong in the next stage of qualifying.
His possible move to Cosmos would therefore represent another step in the career of a player who has become an important part of Bangladesh’s midfield.
The reported destination would also give the Bangladesh international an unusual connection with football history. Pele helped make the Cosmos famous, while Shome could now become part of the club’s modern attempt to rebuild its identity.
