A Sylhet court on Sunday placed suspect Babul Mia on four-day remand in a case filed over the murder of a couple and their teenage domestic help in the city’s Raynagar Mitali Residential Area.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate passed the order after police produced Babul before the court and sought a 10-day remand for questioning.
After a hearing, the court granted four days’ remand.
Mohammad Saiful Islam, deputy commissioner (north) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, confirmed the development.
He said police formally showed Babul Mia arrested in the case in the morning and produced him before the court, seeking the remand as part of the investigation.
The bodies of Abdus Sattar, 82, his wife Suraiya Begum, 72, and their 15-year-old domestic help Tahmina were recovered from the second floor of House No 111 in Raynagar Mitali Residential Area on Wednesday morning.
Sattar was a former director of the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and an adviser to the local ward unit of the Awami League.
Following the killings, the couple’s daughter Selina Sultana returned to Bangladesh from the UK and filed a written complaint with Sylhet Kotwali Police Station on Friday night.
She did not name Babul in the complaint.
Selina, however, alleged that lawyer and Impulse Builders Ltd Chairman Advocate Sirajul Islam may have been involved in the killings.
She alleged that her parents and their domestic help were murdered in a pre-planned attack by hired killers over a long-standing land dispute.
