BNP presidential candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday voiced his vision of a Bangladesh that is happy, prosperous and welfare‑oriented, where ordinary citizens live with dignity, security and opportunity.
Hours before the presidential election, Fakhrul’s residence has been crowded with party leaders, activists and supporters.
He also met party colleagues and people from his constituency, Thakurgaon, at his Hare Road home in Dhaka. He spoke with them, embraced many, and sought prayers from all.
“I want to see a Bangladesh that I dream of — a happy, prosperous and welfare‑oriented state,” he said.
He envisioned a country where marginalised people, working classes and labourers can eat two full meals a day and live in a safe, healthy environment. He also stressed employment for youth and self‑employment opportunities for women.
Fakhrul said he hopes Bangladesh will be recognised globally as a dignified nation, and under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership, it will become a welfare‑oriented state.
Expressing gratitude to the people, Fakhrul thanked Almighty Allah and acknowledged the support of citizens, journalists and professionals throughout his political struggle. He also conveyed special thanks to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Answering a question from journalists, Fakhrul, in an emotional voice, said he would miss many things if he assumed presidential responsibilities. He wished for everyone’s health, safety and welfare, and urged cooperation in building a welfare‑oriented state.
He also remembered former BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, recalling her affection and guidance at different stages of his life.
Voting for the presidential election will begin at 2pm Thursday in the parliamentary chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad and continue until 5pm, conducted by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin. Fakhrul said he would cast his vote at 2pm.
Starting his political journey in leftist student politics, Fakhrul later joined NAP (Bhashani) before moving to BNP founded by President Ziaur Rahman. Over decades, he rose to become BNP’s secretary general.
In 2001, Fakhrul was elected MP from Thakurgaon‑1 on the BNP ticket and served in Khaleda Zia’s cabinet. He is currently serving as minister for Local Government in Tarique Rahman’s government.
