Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as country’s 23rd president.
Mirza Fakhrul won 255 votes in Thursday’s presidential election, defeating Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmad, the candidate of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, who secured 88 votes.
In a congratulatory message posted on his verified Facebook page after the results were announced, Shafiqur extended his best wishes to the newly elected president.
He expressed hope that Mirza Fakhrul would draw on his experience, competence and wisdom to promote justice, uphold democracy, and safeguard Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty in the days ahead.
Shafiqur also wished the new president good health and a long life.
