A video showing actor Somu Chowdhury behaving aggressively towards a man has gone viral on social media.
Police officers can be seen trying to restrain the actor, while the other man also appears to act aggressively.
The incident took place on Saturday morning (15 August) near the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal (RA) in Sylhet.
Somu confirmed the incident to the media but declined to provide further details, ending the phone call when asked about what had happened.
Khan Mohammad Mainul Zakir, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station in Sylhet, said Somu had allegedly attacked a journalist.
“Somu Chowdhury attacked a journalist. He is mentally unwell. Perhaps he became angry during the conversation. However, the matter was resolved through police mediation,” the officer said.
Asked whether Somu had lost his temper because the incident was being filmed, the officer said journalists had been present in the area because the shrine’s donation boxes were being opened and the money was being counted.
“There were many journalists at the shrine from the morning because the donation boxes were being opened and the money was being counted. The incident happened around that time,” he said.
This is not the first time Somu has attracted attention over an incident related to his mental wellbeing.
On 12 June last year, he was reportedly found in a distressed mental state in Gafargaon, Mymensingh.
Local residents later helped move him to a safe place, and footage of that incident also circulated widely on social media.
