Bangladesh’s most decorated cricketer Shakib Al Hasan has paid tribute to former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, offering condolences and prayers following news of her death.
In a statement shared in Bangla, Shakib expressed sympathy for Zia’s family and acknowledged her role in the country’s political history. “In this moment of grief, I express my deep condolences to her family and loved ones,” he wrote. “She made important contributions to the country during her long political life.”
Shakib, 37, has been both a central figure in Bangladesh cricket for more than a decade and a former member of parliament affiliated with the Awami League, which was removed from power following the July revolution. His message stood out given the long-standing rivalry between the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led for decades by Khaleda Zia.
He concluded with a religious prayer, writing, “May Allah grant forgiveness to her soul. I request everyone to pray for her.”
The post drew widespread attention, with many noting the significance of a national sporting icon and former ruling-party figure publicly recognising the legacy of one of Bangladesh’s most influential opposition leaders.
