A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to AKM Shahidul Islam, who was arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on allegations of making derogatory remarks against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the order this Sunday following a hearing, the court allowed the bail.
Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) of DMP Prosecution Division, Mia Mohammad Ashis Bin Hasan, confirmed the matter.
He said the court has granted bail to the accused and he has already been released from jail. A hearing on his discharge in the case has been scheduled for 12 January.
According to court sources, Shahidul was produced before the court on Saturady.
The investigating officer of the case, Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Hasanuzzaman, sought his detention.
Meanwhile, the defence lawyer applied for bail and requested that the hearing be held on Sunday.
Earlier on Saturday, Tarique Rahman paid respects to the graves of late martyr Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, and National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
During the visit, police arrested a man named AKM Shahidul Islam over allegations of making derogatory remarks about Tarique and produced him before the court, which subsequently sent him to jail.
