Jamaat-e-Islami Amir and opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman on Tuesday said the rise in fuel prices has placed a new tax burden on the public, describing it as “burden on public”.
He made the remarks on Tuesday while briefing journalists after meeting the family members of four-year-old child Fahima, who was killed allegedly under torture by her uncle in Sylhet’s Sonatola area.
Local and central leaders of Jamaat were present during the programme. Shafiqur Rahman is in Sylhet on a day-long visit, attending various programmes.
Later in the afternoon, speaking again to reporters after meeting the victim’s family, he said he could not comment on the assessment of the previous three months of BNP-led government activities at this moment. However, he said it could be stated that the country is not in a good condition in line with people’s expectations.
He also expressed deep shock over the killing of the child and demanded swift trial and exemplary punishment for those responsible. He conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.
He further said the recent increase in fuel oil prices within a month amount to burden on the public. He said if price adjustments were necessary, they should have been discussed in parliament. Instead, the fuel price was increased at night while people were asleep, which he termed as cheating the public.
