Bushfires fueled by record-breaking heat have swept through Victoria, destroying homes and leaving tens of thousands without electricity.
The fires, which erupted earlier this week amid an intense heatwave, have prompted officials to issue urgent warnings about the ongoing risk across the state.
So far, more than 300,000 hectares of bushland have been consumed by flames, with authorities reporting that ten major fires remain active as of Saturday.
Experts say Victoria is now facing its most severe fire crisis since the devastating Black Summer of 2019–2020.
Officials confirmed that over 130 buildings, including private residences, have been razed. Approximately 38,000 homes and businesses have lost power, while farms, vineyards, and key infrastructure have also sustained significant damage.
Victoria’s Premier Jacinta Allan stated that thousands of firefighters are on the frontlines, working tirelessly to contain the blazes. She noted that extreme heat and gusty winds are complicating their efforts.
At the national level, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese cautioned that dangerous fire conditions could affect regions beyond Victoria. He extended his support to impacted communities and confirmed that evacuations are ongoing as authorities monitor the evolving situation.
