Police detained a schoolteacher in Ukhia upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Monday following allegations that he sexually harassed several female students.
Faruk Ibrahim, assistant teacher at Morichya Palong High School in Haldia Palong union, was confined by local residents at his residence in Morichya Bazar around 12:30am before police took him into custody.
According to students and guardians, Faruk had long engaged in indecent behaviour and harassment. The latest incident reportedly occurred Sunday afternoon during a class with Class VIII female students of the “Padma” section.
Faruk Sikdar, uncle of one affected student, said complaints had been mounting and public anger erupted after news of the misconduct spread, prompting locals to surround the teacher’s home and alert police.
Guardians alleged the teacher behaved indecently during Sunday’s class, sparking tension among students and anger among residents.
Atikur Rahman Mojumder, officer‑in‑charge of Ukhia Police Station, said police brought the situation under control and took Faruk to the station. “We are investigating the allegations and will take necessary legal action,” he said.
Repeated attempts to contact Abdul Karim, headteacher of Maricha Palong High School, were unsuccessful.
The incident has caused concern among students, guardians, and local residents.
