Savar Chhatra Dal leader Rony Chowdhury alias Rony Islam has been arrested on charges of murdering his wife, Riya Moni.
Rony, 23, who serves as the joint general secretary of Savar Municipal Chhatra Dal, was apprehended by police on Friday morning from the Sobujpara area near Darogar Mor Satmatha under Kotwali Police Station in Rangpur district.
The victim, 21-year-old Riya Moni, was the only child of Abdur Rauf, an expatriate in Saudi Arabia, and Beauty Begum, an expatriate in Malaysia.
According to police sources, Rony and Riya had been married for approximately one and a half years following a six-year relationship. The couple resided in a rented flat in the Chhayabithi area of Savar. It is reported that the couple had recently been experiencing marital discord over various family issues.
The incident came to light on the morning of 8 June, when Rony initially informed his mother, Rina Akhter, via telephone about Riya’s death. Subsequently, Riya’s uncle, Saddam Hossain, arrived at the residence to find the door locked from the outside. Upon being notified, Savar Model Police recovered the body by breaking the lock.
Police said the inquest report revealed multiple injury marks on the body. The deceased was later sent to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for an autopsy.
Saddam Hossain has since filed a murder case at Savar Model Police Station, naming Rony Chowdhury and two to three unidentified individuals as the accused. The case alleges that the suspects carried out a premeditated murder before locking the door and fleeing the scene.
Following the filing of the case, police launched a drive to arrest the suspects, eventually capturing Rony in Rangpur based on a tip-off.
