Dhaka is positive about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visiting India, with the government indicating that the trip could take place soon if the necessary arrangements and diplomatic progress fall into place.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed gave the indication on Thursday while speaking to journalists at the Foreign Ministry.
Asked whether the prime minister would travel to India to attend the BRICS Summit or make a bilateral visit, she said the BRICS Summit was still some time away.
“The BRICS are too late. A lot can happen in a month,” she said.
“The government is busy, and the prime minister is busy. If everything fits together, there will definitely be a visit to India,” she added.
Shama said Bangladesh was positive about engaging with all countries, but any decision would depend on the prime minister’s schedule and the progress of discussions between Dhaka and New Delhi.
Asked whether a meeting between the two prime ministers could help ease tensions in bilateral relations, she said such high-level engagement could create an opportunity to resolve many outstanding issues.
“Anytime the heads of two countries talk, there is a bilateral discussion, and there is an opportunity to solve many problems. That opportunity is there, it remains. And India should also make good use of that opportunity,” she said.
