BNP leader Sarowar Alamgir took oath as a member of parliament on Thursday evening, ending a prolonged legal dispute over his election. The move comes after the High Court upheld validity of his candidature for the Chattogram-2 constituency.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad administered the oath to Sarowar Alamgir at the Parliament Secretariat at around 7:30pm
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the ceremony.
Following the swearing-in, Sarowar signed the official oath register at the office of the parliament secretary, as required under parliamentary rules.
The ceremony was attended by local government minister, finance minister, deputy speaker, chief whip, other whips, lawmakers and senior officials of the Parliament Secretariat.
Earlier in the day, the Election Commission (EC) published a gazette notification declaring Sarowar Alamgir elected as the member of parliament from Chattogram-2.
According to a notification issued by the Parliament Secretariat, the EC published the gazette in an extraordinary issue of the Bangladesh Gazette, formally confirming his election.
Sarowar’s oath followed a High Court ruling earlier on Thursday that declared his candidature valid, clearing the legal hurdle that had prevented him from taking office.
The verdict was delivered by a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Asif Hasan.
Lawyers representing Jamaat-e-Islami, which had challenged Sarowar’s candidature, said they would appeal the High Court’s verdict.
