Rumeen Farhana, former BNP lawmaker and party assistant secretary for international affairs, has collected her nomination to contest the 13th National Parliament Election as an independent candidate from Brahmanbaria-2.
The seat was left out of the BNP’s alliance arrangement.
On Wednesday afternoon, Ali Hossain, former organisational secretary of the Upazila Jubo Dal, collected the nomination papers on her behalf at the office of the Sarail Upazila Executive Officer and Assistant Returning Officer.
The BNP-led alliance has nominated Maulana Junayed Al Habib, vice president of the central committee of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, as its candidate for the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the nomination at a press conference on Tuesday at the party chairperson’s Gulshan political office, citing seat-sharing arrangements with alliance partners.
He also warned that organisational action would be taken against party members who contest independently in defiance of the alliance’s decisions.
Despite this, former reserved-seat MP and BNP joint secretary for international affairs, Barrister Rumeen Farhana, will now contest the seat as an independent candidate.
The Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, which includes Sarail, Ashuganj, and parts of Bijoynagar, saw at least eight BNP nomination aspirants, highlighting intense competition within the party ahead of the polls.
