Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal has been appointed as the 18th attorney general of Bangladesh.
The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs issued a gazette notification on Wednesday.
According to the notification, the president, exercising powers under Article 64(1) of the Constitution, appointed Ruhul Kuddus as the attorney general until further notice.
The appointment comes into effect immediately, according to the notification signed by SM Ershadul Alam, acting secretary of the Law and Justice Division.
Ruhul Kuddus, former secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, is a member of the BNP Executive Committee and serves as the senior joint secretary general of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum. He is also an elected member of the Bangladesh Bar Council, where he currently holds the position of chairman of the Executive Committee.
His legal career began in 1995 at the Dhaka District and Sessions Judge Court. He was subsequently enrolled as an advocate of the High Court Division in 1996 and the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court in 2008. He was designated as a senior advocate of the Supreme Court in 2023.
In his academic life, Ruhul Kuddus was involved in journalism as a student. He obtained his LLB (honours) and LLM degrees from Dhaka University in 1993 and 1994, respectively. He later earned an LLB (honours) degree from the University of London in 2005 and completed the Bar Vocational Studies at a university in London in 2006. He was called to the Bar from Lincoln’s Inn, UK, that same year.
The post of Attorney General became vacant after the 17th Attorney General, Md Asaduzzaman, resigned on 27 December last year to contest the 13th national election. Following his resignation, Additional Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf had been serving as the acting attorney general.
Asaduzzaman had been appointed on 8 August 2024, following the fall of the Awami League government during the July mass uprising.
