A seven-year-old Rohingya child died after a landslide struck Tajnimarkhola Camp-13 in Palongkhali Union of Ukhiya Upazila, Cox’s Bazar, on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased, identified as Nunushi, was the son of Jamat Hossain, a resident of F-5 Block of the camp.
The incident occurred amid continuous heavy rainfall when soil and rocks from a nearby hillside collapsed onto the child, killing him on the spot.
Acting Commander of the 8th Armed Police Battalion (APBN) Mohammad Riaz Uddin Ahmed confirmed the incident, saying heavy rain and mountain runoff had made several hillsides inside the camps unstable and hazardous.
Following the incident, APBN personnel rushed to the spot and assisted local residents in rescue efforts. They are also monitoring the overall situation in the camp, officials said.
Authorities have warned residents living in vulnerable areas to remain alert and move to safer locations if necessary.
The risk of landslides in Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar rises during the monsoon season as persistent rainfall weakens the hillsides.
At least 19 Rohingya refugees were killed in similar landslide incidents last month, highlighting the recurring danger faced by thousands of people living in the hilly camp areas.
Officials and humanitarian agencies have stressed the need to relocate residents from high-risk zones and strengthen preventive measures to reduce monsoon-related risks.
