Riyan Parag will lead the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026 after the franchise confirmed his appointment on Friday, stepping into the role following Sanju Samson’s move to the Chennai Super Kings and signalling a clear reset in leadership and direction.
The decision rewards loyalty as much as potential. Parag joined the Royals as a teenager in 2019 and never wore another IPL shirt.
He already tasted the job last season when injury sidelined Samson. The results hurt, with two wins from eight matches and a ninth-place finish, but Parag refused to shrink under pressure.
He led with the bat even when the team faltered. He averaged 38.57 during that spell and smashed a career-best 95 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, showing authority rather than hesitation.
Across 84 IPL matches, Parag scored 1566 runs at a strike rate of 141.84. Numbers alone do not tell the full story, but they underline steady growth rather than hype.
His 2024 season marked the turning point. He piled up 573 runs at a strike rate close to 150 and finally matched output with expectation.
Last season brought a different challenge. He struck at 166.52 but finished with only 393 runs and one half-century, a reminder that consistency still matters more than fireworks.
Rajasthan now hand him the armband at a moment of real transition. Rahul Dravid exits after the 2025 season, closing another chapter in the Royals’ modern history.
