Resignation submitted to speaker

The constitutional vacancy follows the submission of a formal resignation letter by BNP reserved-seat lawmaker Ferdousy Ahmed Misty to the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad confirmed that Misty visited his office on Thursday afternoon and submitted her resignation letter, which he formally accepted.

He further said that the notice was sent for publication of a gazette declaring the seat vacant. When questioned by journalists about whether the letter specified any cause for stepping down, the Speaker clarified that lawmakers do not state reasons when submitting their resignation.

Her resignation came after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman instructed her to step down following an attack on the Radda Centre in Mirpur, Dhaka.

BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed the directive to TIMES, while the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibli also communicated the decision to the media.

Links to Mirpur incident, past controversies

The Radda Centre in Mirpur was attacked, vandalised, and looted around midnight on 24 September. Allegations subsequently emerged regarding the involvement of leaders and activists of the ruling party across various levels.

According to media reports, Misty had previously faced controversy over her political conduct, including allegations of extortion, terrorism, and land grabbing during her tenure as a ward councillor.

These allegations had repeatedly raised questions regarding her political role and activities.
