A rickshaw puller was killed and another injured after a covered van rammed into their vehicle in the capital’s North Badda area on Friday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Jewel Mia, 38, son of Abdul Kadir, hailing from Nayekpur village in Madan upazila, Netrokona. He resided in the Kalachandpur area of Gulshan and had been married to Sajeeda for only six months. The injured was Tapan Roy, 40.
The accident occurred around 3pm in front of Kamrul’s Biryani shop in North Badda.
According to the deceased’s brother-in-law Azizul Mia, Jewel, a battery-run rickshaw puller by profession, had gone out to work in the morning.
Azizul stated that a traffic sergeant in Aftabnagar area had earlier seized Jewel’s rickshaw and filed a case against him. Jewel was reportedly returning to Kalachandpur after retrieving the battery from the seized rickshaw when the accident occurred.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Shafiqul Islam of Badda Police Station confirmed that Jewel and another man Tapan Ray were travelling on a rickshaw from Aftabnagar towards Gulshan Kalachandpur.
A covered van struck the rickshaw from behind, causing Jewel to fall onto the road before being run over by the vehicle. He died on the spot.
Tapan Roy, who also works as a rickshaw puller, sustained injuries and was provided with primary treatment at a local hospital
